Sunday
Departure
from Le Tour via the Col de Balme by the gondola lift system, then hike up to
and overnight stay in the Albert 1er mountain refuge (2702m).
Monday
Traverse
the higher mountain pass of Le Tour (3281m), then the Trient plateau.
Descent of the Orny glacier to arrive at La Breya (2401m) and down to
Champex by chairlift. Overnight stay in the Swiss Alpine Club hotel on the shores of a
lake.
Tuesday
Early
morning departure by taxi to get to the Chanrion mountain hut (2462m).
Climb up to the Lire Rose pass (3115m) and traverse the Cheillon pass
(3255m) via the Giettro glacier.
Descent, then overnight stay in the Dix mountain refuge (2928m).
Wednesday
Ascent
of the Pigne d’Arolla (3796m), the highest point of the trek, then down to the
Vignettes mountain refuge (3158m).
Thursday
Departure
from the hut down to the Chermotane mountain pass (3053m) then up to the Evêque
mountain pass (3392m).
Descent from the top of the Arolla glacier.
Friday
From
the refuge we will descend to the Bertol pass to ascend the upper part of the
Mont Miné glacier.
We will then attempt to summit the Tête Blanche (3724m) with its superb
view of the Matterhorn, then start our descent into Zermatt via the Valpelline
mountain pass (3568m), the Stockji glacier and its rocky ridge, before reaching
the Zmutt glacier and its moraine.
From there, a pretty trail leads us to Zermatt (1618m) via Zmutt and a
string of tiny hamlets.
Return by train as far as Täsch, then taxi to St Gervais.
Physical
condition
It is advisable to be in good physical condition.
Level of ability
Some experience of walking on mountain trails. This tour is ideal for the
discovery and initiation into glacial hiking with stages of 5 to 9 hours of
walking on average.
